Why do we need to teach keyboarding?
  • High School students need to use lab time efficiently.
  • High School students need to focus on completing assignments rather then finding the letters on the keyboard.
  • Keyboarding is a lifelong skill.

How will we teach it?
  • Formal instruction will begin in 5th grade and continue it through 8th grade
  • Through 5th and 6th grade students will receive instruction 30 minutes, 3 times a week all year.
  • In 7th and 8th grade students will receive instruction every other day, for half of the year

Who will teach it?
  • Students will go to computer lab for instruction.
  • A computer lab technician will teach the program.

Goals and Objectives
What do we want our students to learn?

Students will be able to:
  • Identify letters on the keyboard by locating and discussing the 'home' row
  • Understand the proper posture
  • Use proper hand position and technique for solid typing skills
  • Memorize the keys and utilize the keyboard for timing and accuracy

How will we assess students?
  • We will look at technique, accuracy and attitude.
  • Response tests, performance assessments, products and personal communication will be used to assess students.
  • Three types of assessments: Diagnostic, Formative, Summative

Diagnostic Assessment
Surveys and pretests
  • Determine students knowledge of technology
  • Determine students attitude towards technology and keyboarding
  • Give teachers baseline data to track student progress
Formative Assessment
  • Quizzes, technique checklists, rating scales and informal observations.
  • Allows teachers to keep track of students progress
Summative Assessment
  • Final products: Letters, reports, newsletters or brochures.
  • This data can be compared to pretests to see what students have learned.
How can you support your student at home?
  • Emphasize technique rather than accuracy
  • Students should practice 10-15 minutes each day (Keep sessions short)
  • Students can use printable keyboards to practice
  • Students should be monitored when using keyboarding software, there is a possibility that they could pick up bad habits
  • Keyboarding software should be selected carefully
